Your guide on what Trump’s second term for Washington, Business and the World means
Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, said that the United States made “substantial progress” for two days of commercial conversations with Chinese officials in Geneva, in the first sign that Washington and Beijing could begin to reduce tensions.
“Tomorrow we will give details, but I can tell you that the conversations were productive,” Bessent told journalists after he and the United States commercial representative, Jamieson Greer, ended his meetings with the Chinese Deputy Property.
Greer said that it was “important to understand how quickly we were able to reach the agreement, which reflects that the differences may not be as great as they might think” and added that there had been “many bases”.
The optimistic comments of the United States Negotiation Team were the first sign that the countries could delay the trade war that has ruined financial markets and has triggered concerns about the world supply chains.
The United States has placed a 145 percent rate on the goods of China, while Beijing has resumed with its own amount of 125 percent.
The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a comment on China’s position on conversations. United States and Chinese negotiation teams gathered at the Geneva Residence of the Swiss ambassador to the UN.
Following the first day of negotiations on Saturday, Trump published on its real social platform that the United States and China had made a “great progress”. He added: “A total restoration negotiated in a friendly but constructive way.”
