German Chancellor Friedrich Mer has chosen an energy sector executive as Minister of Economy, as he unveiled his party’s cabinet one week before taking office.
The leader of the Christian Democrats, who won elections in February and signed a coalition agreement with Social Democrats (SPD) earlier this month, has named Katherin Reiche, the head of Westenergie, a unit of the German energy group EON, to run the Ministry of Economy, according to a statement on Monday.
Johann Wadephul, a Senior CDU Member and a nearby ally, will be appointed Foreign Minister, while Thorsten Frei, Merz’s number two in Parliament, will become his highest assistant as the Chancellery Chief.
The first -line announcement highlights the sense of urgent between the Merz team, as the largest economy in Europe faces economic and geopolitical challenges. U.S. commercial rates could bow the export nation in this year. This would come after three years of stagnation as Germany Grapes with high energy costs and fierce competition in the export markets of Chinese rivals.
Berlin is also going through a foreign policy disorder, as Washington under Donald Trump seeks to reduce his military commitment to Europe, a pillar of the post -war Renaissance of Germany.
Multiprongs challenges have led Merz To loosen the country’s constitutional debt limit and vote through a package of € 1 costs to equip the Bundeswehr and modernize the aging infrastructure.
Merz’s CDU holds a party conference on Monday to seal the coalition agreement that concluded with the SPD. But the Social Democrats are not expected to spread their own ministerial options until after the members’ vote on the coalition agreement, whose results will be made on Wednesday.
The CDU and his Bavarian German party, the CSU, will hold 10 out of 17 ministerial positions. The SPD portfolios include defense and finance.
If the SPD members are again the Government Agreement, Merz will be voted as Chancellor for the Bundestag on May 6.
Reiche’s appointment emphasizes what the energy will look like in the heart of Merz’s economic agenda. Currently, a former CDU deputy, Reiche is the CEO of the German Energy and Westhenergie Energy and Water, which is mostly owned by EON.
After being elected to Parliament for the first time at the age of 25 in 1998, he left politics in 2015 to lead a commercial association of public services. He has a degree in Chemistry and is from the German State of Brandenburg.
Wadephul, Member of the Most Northern Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, has been responsible for foreign affairs in Parliament. He will be the Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs from the Chancellor Party since the 1960’s, part of Merz’s efforts to lead a more coherent approach to the global stage.
