Nou Delhi (Reuters) – India seeks to collect import rights in some products made in the United States to counteract Washington’s rates in steel and aluminum products, a document presented at the World Trade Organization.
“The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations takes the form of an increase in rates in selected products originated in the United States,” said the May 12 document.
He did not say what kind of products could be subjected to rates.
In March, the United States imposed 25% tax on steel and aluminum imports: an extension of the rates imposed for the first time in 2018 during the first term of the United States President Donald Trump.
India, the second largest raw steel producer in the world, told the WTO document that measures would affect $ 7 billion products of products made in India imported in the United States.
In addition to the functions of steel and aluminum, the Trump administration has threatened the reciprocal rates of 26% on Indian goods. The two countries are trying to reach a commercial agreement, with a new Delhi that offers its fare gap with the United States by two thirds.
India has some of the highest rates in the world to imports and Trump has previously called India as “tariff abuser”.
India has also collected its own steel rates. Last month, it imposed 12% of temporary rates to stop cheap steel imports, mainly from China.
In addition to his attempts to supply the national supply, New Delhi also seeks to gain more access to Indian steel exports through commercial conversations with members.
