Your guide on what Trump’s second term for Washington, Business and the World means
Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney will bring together Donald Trump on Tuesday in Washington to try to resuscitate a crucial trade relationship with the United States that the Ottawa leader recently described as “finished.”
Will be the first forest visit of CARNEY since his liberal party won a General elections on Monday after a campaign eclipsed by U.S. President’s discomfort on Canada and his rates in some of his exports.
Carney Ottawa on Friday said he had celebrated a “very constructive call” with Trump and the two leaders had agreed to meet -next week in the US capital.
“Our goal will focus on both immediate commercial pressures and the largest economic and security relationships between our two sovereignist nations,” he said.
Carney also announced that King Charles would give a speech to open the new Parliament in Ottawa at the end of this month.
“This historical honor coincides with the weight of our times,” Carney said about the visit of the king, who is also the sovereign of Canada. It will be the first time in almost 50 years that the monarch participates in the opening of Parliament.
Carney was talking at his first press conference since his liberals defeated the Pierre Poilievre Conservative Party after a campaign dominated by Trump’s debate and Canada’s relationship with his most important commercial partner.
Trump’s mockery in Canada and his first Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as President’s threats to annex the country – which described as a potential “51st state” – promoted the liberal party of a second far from the polls last year to victory this week.
Relations between the two allies and commercial partners have been affected by the announcement of the rates despite the free trade agreement of the United States-Mexico-Canada that the President negotiated during his first term.
Carney committed in a speech after his victory on Monday that Trump would “never break” Canada and said that Ottawa would look for new commercial alliances with countries in Europe and elsewhere.
The Prime Minister on Friday said that his meeting at the White House would address the “complex” rates of the United States that affect the automotive, steel and aluminum industries in Canada.
“I go there with the expectation of difficult but Constructive talks“, He said.
Carney, who was formerly the governor of the Bank of England, said that Trump had not made any reference to Canada, becoming a north -American state on his phone.
“This will never happen,” the Prime Minister said.
Carney, who will lead a minority government after his party lost closely to win the majority of seats in Parliament, exposed his vision to “advance the investment of the nation’s construction that will transform our economy.”
United States fares affect the economy of Canada.
General Motors said on Friday that it would reduce production at an Ontario plant that the union said would mean more than 2,000 labor losses. In April, Carmaker Stellalantis announced that he was “temporarily stopping production” for two weeks.
“We are struggling hard for our automobile sector, all our sectors, in these negotiations with the North -Americans,” said Carney.
Goldy Hyder, CEO of the Canada Business Council, said on Tuesday that the USMCA remained the best frame “to restore the certainty, stability and predictability” of the countries’ commercial relationship.
Carney said that the new Canada Cabinet would be sworn during the week of May 12 and that Parliament would be remembered for the king’s speech on May 27.
