Starmer rejects Enoch Powell parallel after “Island of Strangers” speech

Downing Street has rejected the suggestions that Sir Keir Starmer channeled a language similar to that of the former conservative politician on the right, Enoch Powell, when the Prime Minister gave a speech on Monday asking for much tougher controls on immigration.

The Labor Prime Minister caused a dismay among many left-wing deputies when he said that “we risk becoming an island of strangers” without new rules to stop the “Squalidí chapter” of Increasing migration.

Critics said that his words were echoed by those used by Powell in his controversial speech “Rivers of Blood” in 1968, in which he warned of a future where the whites “were found in their own country.”

Asked about Powell, a Downing Street spokesman said that Tight “I would completely reject the previous speeches made by this individual.”

He added: “The Prime Minister rejects these comparisons and is behind the argument that was causing migrants to bring a massive contribution to our country, but migration must be controlled and must be fair.”

The spokesman said it was clear that voters wanted the ministers to cut clean migration figures, which had “quadrupled” to register highs during the previous four years of the last conservative government, pressing on housing and other public services.

“The British audience rightly awaits the government who has control of immigration so that the previous government lost control of immigration … and assure us that we have a system based on equity and control and lower the high immigration levels we saw in the previous government,” he said.

Downing Street’s intervention took place after several large labor figures criticized Starmer’s language.

Sarah Owen, the President of the Women’s Committee and Equalities of the Chamber, who is a heritage of Malaysia-Chinese, said: “Persecuting the tail on the right risks to take our country on a very dark path. The best way to avoid becoming an” island of strangers “is to invest in communities to prosper, not to become people.”

Sadiq Khan, London’s Labor Mayor, said he would not have used the phrase “Island of strangers”. He told LBC: “The type of language I use is different from the language used by others. It’s not the type of words I would use.”

Asked before the day if Starmer had echoed the words of Powell, the secretary of the Interior, Yvette Cooper, said that the phrasing was “completely different”, given the overall support of the Prime Minister for Immigration.

“I don’t think it’s right to do these comparisons, I think it’s completely different,” he told BBC Radio 4 Today Program.

“The Prime Minister said yesterday, I think almost in the same breath, he spoke of the diverse country that we are and that we are part of our strength. But he also talked about how to properly control and manage immigration properly, and it has not been. I think it is really good to have these two opinions.”

Policies in the immigration document, including the increase in English language standards needed for all visas, increasing the time it takes to many applicants to obtain the citizens of five to 10 years and increase the requirements of skills of foreign workers to the level of degree outside of several key industries with a shortage of major skills.
