Donald Trump plans to use his executive powers to force pharmaceutical companies to drastically reduce drug cost in the United States, despite fierce opposition to industry and some higher Republicans.

In a post on social media on Sunday evening, Trump said he would sign an order on Monday, which would reduce prices “almost immediately between 30 percent and 80 percent”.

He added that the United States would introduce a “more favored nation” policy, “so the United States will pay the same price as the nation paying the lowest price anywhere in the world.”

Trump tried a similar movement during his first term in office, but could not progress in the midst of the strong resistance of the pharmaceutical industry.

The President of the United States suggested that he would now see any opposition in the sector, despite the large pharmaceutical groups and the commercial bodies that had donated to their inauguration.

“The contributions of the campaign can make wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican party,” Trump added about social truth. “We are going to do the right thing, which Democrats have fought for many years.”

Answering the proposed executive order, the PHRMA industry lobby group said “the configuration of government price in any form is bad for North -Americans.” He added that “to reduce the costs of medicine for the North -Americans, we should deal with the growing quota of the costs of medicine that go to intermediaries in the system.”

The group was one of the several representative bodies that sued Trump’s last administration to try to restrict drug prices, finally leading the Biden White House to leave the proposals completely.

The Biden administration later inserted a drug negotiation provision into its inflation reduction law, aimed at 10 specific medicines in a movement that was estimated to save almost $ 100 million in ten years. The movement also promoted a large number of demands from the pharmaceutical industry, but most of them so far have not been successful.

The sector has also launched a public relations campaign, saying that these schemes discourage innovation and reduce research spending.

Trump rejected the claims in his post, writing that drug companies “would say that for years, they were the costs of research and development, and that all these costs were, and would not be, for no reason, by the” suckers “of America, alone.”

He stated that, as a result of the expected order, “our country will finally be treated fairly.”

White House officials have sought to force a drug reduction provision to a budget bill, but they faced a boost from some higher Republicans, including the president of the house Mike Johnson.
