Your guide on what Trump’s second term for Washington, Business and the World means
Hamas said on Sunday that he would release a Israeli-American hostage held in Gaza as a gesture of goodwill to Donald Trump, ahead of a visit to the Middle East this week by the President of the United States.
Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya said that the passage to release Edan Alexander took place after conversations with American officials, where the Palestinian militant group showed a “high level of positivity” to try to ensure a cessation of fire with Israel and end war in Gaza.
Alexandre “will be released as part of the steps that are taken to cease the fire … and allow the entry of humanitarian aid and relief for our people to the Gaza Strip,” added Hayya.
A diplomat informed of the talks confirmed that the agreement to release Alexander took place after the United States committed directly to Hamas.
