David Steiner, former CEO of the largest waste management company in the country, is currently serving in FedEx The Board of Directors is willing to take over the controlthe United States Postal ServiceBecoming the 76th General Postmaster of the Nation.
The announcement of Steiner’s appointment, which increased the concern of postcards for possible efforts to privatize USPS, was made on Friday by Amber Mcrenolds, President of the USPS Government Council, during a meeting of the independent group that oversees the service.
“We expect Mr Steiner to join the organization in July, assuming his success of the ethics and security processes that are currently underway,” said Mcreynolds.
Friday’s announcement by the Governing Council comes when President Donald Trump and the Department of Efficiency of the Government Department of his counselor Elon Musk have come up with the idea ofPrivatization of the postal service of almost 250 yearswhich has faced financial challenges in the middle of a mixture of changing mail and other problems.
Steiner’s choice has been seen by postal unions as Harbinger for a possible privatization of some or all the venerable almost public institution, which is largely self-financed and has a mission to serve all addresses in the country: about 167 million residences, companies and emails.
Postal unions have maintained protests across the country due to potential privatization, job cuts and possibly ending with the obligation of the Universal Service.
Brian L. Renfroe, President of the National Association of Carriers de Cartes, said that Steiner is not only an executive in the private sector, but someone who is on the board of one of the main competitors of the postal service.
“Its selection is not just a conflict of interest: it is an aggressive step to deliver the e -mail system of America to corporate interests,” Renfroe said in a statement. “Private expeditionaries have been waiting to get USPS out of package publication for years. Steiner’s selection is an open invitation to make it.”
The Renfroe Union represents 205,000 active city carriers and around 90,000 retirees.
Mark Dimondstein, President of the American Union of Postal Workers, representing more than 220,000 USPS employees and retirees, compared Steiner’s appointment with a fox guarding a chicken house.
“FEDEX has a very different agenda than public postal service. And they are a major competitor of the United States Postal Service,” he said. “I am not talking about any attribute of an individual, but for me, this is the last type of person who will put the public institution as an anchor of the mail package industry in the country.”
Steiner, who will leave the FEDEX board, said in a written statement that he admires the USPS public service mission and called it “an incredible honor that was asked to direct the largest postal organization in the world”.
“I think holding his role as an independent establishment of the executive branch,” Steiner said, who served as CEO of Waste management Inc. From 2004 to October 2016.
In a written statement, Mcreynolds called Steiner “the right person to run the postal service at this time to ensure that this magnificent and historical organization prosper in the future.”
“Dave is a highly regarded leader and executive with a huge vision, experience and ability that can be applied to the long -term commercial mission and commercial needs of the postal service,” he added. “Our advice hopes to work with Dave, as it assumes the basic terms of providing a universal and excellent service for the North -American public and doing it in a sustainable financial way.”
The postal service is in the midst of a 10 -year cost modernization and reduction plan that began in 2021 under the post -tailor Louis Deajoy, whichResigned in March. The plan is an attempt to stop losses to the agency, which has a budget of about $ 78 billion a year and is mostly self -financing, including through stamps and packages.
Known as “Delivery for America”, the initiative has received significantly mixed criticism. Although postal officials claim that they have caused a significant improvement in efficiency, some members of the congress have criticized it for having led to mail delays, unsustainable increases, and business diminutions.
In addition to privatization, we also talked about moving USPS under the control of the United States Department of Commerce.
The Washington Post first reported Steiner.
