France and Poland are deepened in signal defense with Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump

France and Poland must sign a wide treaty that covers defense and economic issues in the last play of European countries to deepen military bonds in the face of Russia’s aggression and uncertainty about the security guarantees of the United States.

The pact will be signed by the French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on May 9, when Europe has been celebrating 80 years since the end of World War II. The pact was of years that it gained renewed importance after the openings of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to Russia and the threats to withdraw the North -American guarantees who have jeopardized European security for decades.

“Tusk also now sends a message to Washington, our main ally for so many years,” said Aleksander Olech, a security analyst at Defense24, a Polish think-Tank. “It is a clear signal that Poland not only depends on the United States, but it can also have other strong nuclear allies.”

The Defense Pact comes after Fang He recently suggested that Poland was open to exploring ways of being covered by the nuclear umbrella of France. Tusk also spoke of Poland of developing his own nuclear chiefs to deter Russia.

France has said for decades that the “vital interests” that determine the use of atomic weapons have a “European dimension”. But Paris never defined the term, in order to keep the president’s options open and guess the opponent: the key to nuclear deterrent.

A French official said that Macron and Tusk were unlikely to come to conclusions about the nuclear deterrent when they meet to sign their treaty in the northern city -East Nancy.

The agreement will deal with a wide range of topics and give Poland a treaty similar to those who already unite France and its neighbors Germany, Italy and Spain. France also has defenses focused with other countries, such as the Lancaster Casa Accord with the United Kingdom.

Tusk said earlier this week that the treaty would lead to “very serious acceleration” of economic and military security on the continent.

On the economic front, France hopes to play a greater role in Poland’s energy transition away from coal, which still represents most of its electricity production.

The French official said that the treaty also showed how Paris saw Warsaw as an increasingly vital partner in the context of war in Ukraine.

Macron has been a diplomatic push to influence Trump in Ukraine’s peace talks that the North -American Administration is performing with Moscow and Kiev, and to avoid the threat of an increase in United States’ rates to European imports.

Both are examples of the argument of the Long French leader that Europe must be more autonomous and competitive to withstand geopolitical tensions. Macron has worked closely with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, on how to protect Ukraine if Trump negotiates a fire without offering US security guarantees.

Next Wednesday, the new chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, will visit Macron in Paris and then Tusk in Warsaw. Merz also indicated interest in French nuclear umbrella and said that Europe could no longer count on the United States for protection.

France and Poland are updating a bilateral treaty dating to 1991, shortly after Poland left the communist government and several years before NATO joined and then in the EU.

“The goal is to deepen and operate the key elements of the Franco-Polonian relationship, including the evaluation of threats, shared defense projects, and the extension of the conversation on strategic issues, including nuclear deterrent,” said the French official.

Although the nuclear doctrine of France will not change, you can find forms within it to meet the needs of EU allies as Poland.

The Franco-Polish relationship was incorporated in 2016, when the government led by the Nationalist and Justice Party of the right canceled a $ 3.5 million agreement Buy Caracal helicopters made by Airbus that had been agreed by the previous Tusk government.

Poland is NATO’s largest Spender, as part of GDP, with 4.7 percent of its GDP for defense this year, although most of their orders have been put in North -American and South -Coreans.

Under the new treaty, France could increase the sale of military teams in Poland.

“Macron now talks about the need to buy Europeans, but everyone understands that their priority is to sell French (equipment) in Poland and other EU partners,” said a former Polish defense official.

Airbus competes to gain Polish contracts for helicopters, aircraft transport and supply aircraft for the growing Warsaw hunting jet fleet, which next year will also include the F-35. The Polish navy also plans a large purchase of submarines, with France among a good handful of bidders.

However, Tusk confirmed earlier this week that the American Westinghouse would build the first nuclear power plant in Poland, despite the eleventh hour lobby to select EDF.

“To be forceful, France has not really participated in Poland and we see you as a very good companion, but now that the United States change its policies, they also see the possibility of being more present here,” said Defense24 Olech.
