Bengaluru (Reuters) – Apple aims to make most of their iphones sold in the United States in India factories in late 2026, and is accelerating these plans for sailing on potentially higher rates in China, its main manufacturing base, told Reuters a source.
The North -American technological giant has urgent conversations with Foxconn and Tata contracts to achieve this, the person who refused to be named as a planning process is confidential, said on Friday.
Apple and Foxconn did not respond immediately to comments, while Tata refused to comment.
Apple sells more than 60 million iPhones in the United States annually with approximately 80% of them in China currently.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted India in recent years as a smartphone manufacturing center, but the highest duties for importing mobile pieces compared to many other countries means that it is still expensive for companies to produce in India.
For iphones, manufacturing costs in India are 5-8% higher than in China, with the difference up to 10% in some cases, the source said.
Apple has already increased production in India to overcome United States President Donald Trump’s rates by sending about 600 tonnes of iphones worth $ 2 billion in the United States in March. India shipments set a record for both their Tata and Foxconn contractors, with the same one who counted smartphones worth $ 1.3 billion, reported Reuters last week.
In April, the North -American Administration imposed 26% of Rights on Imports of India, much less than more than 100% of China at that time. Since then, Washington has stopped most duties for three months, except for China.
The Trump administration has indicated the opening to decrease the trade war between the two largest economies in the world, which has raised fears of recession.
Financial Times first reported on the Apple Plan on Friday.
As Apple diversifies its manufacture beyond China, India has positioned itself to play a critical role. Foxconn and Tata, its two main suppliers there, have three factories in total, with two more built.
