The United Kingdom is in talks with France and Saudi Arabia as to whether a Palestinian state is recognized at a United Nations Conference in June.
But Foreign Secretary of Britain David Lammy said on Wednesday that the United Kingdom wants recognition to be part of the movements towards a solution of two states to the extended Israeli-Palestine crisis, rather than a symbolic act.
His comments arrive after French President Emmanuel Macron War between Hamas and Israel.
The New York Conference will be chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, who have sought to establish a global alliance to promote the creation of a Palestinian state with Israel.
In a statement to a House of Lords Committee, the second House of Parliament in the United Kingdom, Lammy said that the labor government would prefer a Palestinian state as part of a movement towards a solution of two states to the crisis.
“We will continue to talk to the partners about this; President Macron has had a lot to say about it more recently, with the Saudis,” said Lammy.
“It is unacceptable that any group of people has lived without any more time than I have been alive,” he said. “The only option is two states and we will continue to work with the partners.
Lammy also seemed like a precautionary note.
“I recognize that there are some who see this as a symbolic, and there are countries in Europe that have recently taken this step.
Most United Nations members already recognize a Palestinian state. Several European countriesincluding Spain, Ireland and Norway, they formally recognized a Palestinian state last year.
But two European permanent members of the United Nations Security Council who took a similar step would be considered a more significant impulse for the Palestinians.
However, diplomats say that the challenge is to decide when to use recognition more effectively as a point of exploitation with both Palestinians and Israel, and if it is unconditionally or when certain terms have been fulfilled.
The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly ruled out the steps to a solution of two states or to concessions to the Palestinians.
It has been embellished by the re-election of Donald Trump, widely considered as the most pro-Israel President, who has requested that Gaza be emptied of Palestinians, taken by the United States and became the “Riviera de la Eriento Middle”.
Trump’s team helped a fire to cease the fire between Israel and Hamas in January, under which the militant group agreed to release hostages celebrated in Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons and an increase in help in the besieged strip.
But the fragile truce collapsed last month and Israel has imposed a Complete siege in Gaza And he renewed his offensive at the Palestinian enclave.
The western and Arab states have been affecting the way the crisis has ended since the war in Gaza was triggered by the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 in Israel, which killed 1,200 people.
Israel’s retaliation offensive in Gaza has killed more than 52,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials, and has reduced much of the territory to the wasteland.
